When nature dies, we need a new nature, a re-created nature, build on top of our unwanted spaces and our unwanted things. These photographs were taken in former landfill sites and other transformed spaces, spaces that died and in some way or another, resurrected.
Once they have been “restored” into a natural-looking site, these places are often used for leisure. The cycle often starts with the extraction of gravel and sand, then the enormous holes left are filled with our rubbish and on top of it a new green space is designed. The desired is dug out, the undesired dug in.
What attracts me to these sites is the rupture in the space that can be felt, the conflict between the human and the non-human. Can we still speak of natural vs artificial? Not here. These places feel like conflict zones, no-man’s lands, where meaning is yet to be defined.
